When Your Crystal Chandelier Looks Dirty -- Simple Ways To Clean Them Up

Your crystal chandelier is the pride of your home. It gives off wonderful lighting and the dangling crystals speak of elegance and luxury that no other household item can hope to match. But when your chandelier starts to look dull and dirty, then it’s the perfect time for you to give them a good clean to bring back its quality look.

Many crystal chandelier owners would think that cleaning them up is a chore. Consider the size of one; you might look at the task as a daunting and stressful experience. But you don't have to experience it if you don’t want to with these simple crystal chandelier cleaning tips.

Tip # 1: Dismantle It First

Cleaning up your crystal chandelier while all the parts are in place is going to be problem. Aside from accidents that are bound to occur during and after the cleaning, you can never really make sure that all of the parts are thoroughly wiped and cleaned. Such is the case; you might want to dismantle your crystal chandelier first part by part.

Start by removing the crystals from their sockets or hinges before moving on to the light bulbs. Once all the extras are removed, you will have a clear access to the frame. Separate the crystals and wrap them up with paper or cloth to avoid scratching. Put the bulb in one corner to avoid breaking them. While you're at it, cover all exposed light bulb sockets to avoid getting electrocuted. Turn off the switch and put a tape on it so none will accidentally turn it on while you're up there.

Tip # 2: Getting Started On The Frame

Cleaning the frame of your chandelier when all other components are removed is easy. You don’t have to detach it from your ceiling since you have full access to it. When cleaning one, you can use home-made cleaning solutions, like mild ammonia and water. But if you have some cash to spare, you can always stock up on pH-balanced cleaning agents to ensure that the finishing on your chandelier's frame is protected while giving it a thorough cleaning.

Tip # 3: Getting Started With The Crystals

Cleaning the crystals of your chandelier need a lot of patience; never rush on this project if you don’t want to compromise its quality. Most homeowners would consider putting their crystals in a dishwasher to simplify the chore -- thinking that it has the same material used in crystal glasses used in the kitchen.

But in truth, crystals of chandeliers are made of purer consistency compared to their kitchen counterpart. Putting them in a dishwasher with all the heat and moisture around them will cause it to fog up. This will not bode well with your chandelier's quality.

A method in cleaning the crystals of your chandelier is to wipe them clean first using a washcloth to remove the dust and thoroughly dose them with water from your kitchen sink. Running water will ensure that the temperature will remain constant to avoid your crystals from fogging up.
